- George William McVay III tells
the forum a little about the history of the McVay Family.
- (April 1999)
- My father was born 17 January, 1949 and died
2 January 1990.
-
- My grandfather was born circa 1920 and died
in 1972
- (I'm getting the 1920 from the fact that
he died at age 52).
-
- My grandmother's name was Marion - She just
died last fall. I Don't know exactly how old she was.
-
- My father married my mother in 1968 - Had
2 children - My sister Kelli in 1969 and I was born in 1970.
-
- He went to Vietnam and we moved to Florida
so that we could be near my maternal grandparents in Gainesville.
(That is how we ended up in Florida).
-
- My parents were divorced in 1974 and my mother
received custody, moved to Georgia and remarried.
-
- My father also remarried (Victoria - Vicky)
a woman who worked with my mother and remained in Florida.
- He subsequently divorced and met my current
stepmother Mary.
-
- They had another son Shane - who is now 10.
- The prospect of getting back into the "family
business" has been bantered about a few times with the V18
being a prime consideration as an initial platform. We'll see.
- I am not certain of Grandpa's connection
with Ruhe and the Bluenose
- (An aside - I am going to see a 90' Bluenose
sloop this weekend - She is a restoration project of a family
friend - I will be gone for 4 days - Will be doing a LOT of sailing)
I will check with my Uncle David regarding any connection with
Ruhe.
-
- My family has been a Navy family forever
(Until my father who was in the Army in Vietnam) and had one
of those "Guaranteed" Naval Academy slots forever.
-
- I'm not certain how we transitioned into
manufacturing. My father definitely learned from and worked/collaborated
with my grandfather. Take a look at a minuet if you ever get
a chance - V18 without a cabin.
- I'm not sure about the exact location of
the molds - I will do some checking. All other documentation
should be with the molds though we may have copies in the garage
- We have all sorts of stuff in there - Intimidating to even
open the door.
Only the 2 designs ever reached production though I understand
that there was early work on a midsize (About a 33) version.
It was never seriously considered for implementation as we couldn't
even produce the 18 and 26 to meet demand (Ever try to find one
of the 26's?).
