Here's the most I know about unscrambling the hull numbers, courtesy of Jim Fowler, the original sailmaker for the V18, plus some guesswork on my part:
 
Take a number, VYN81731M81F, for instance...

VYN = Victoria Yacht Number
81 = year built
7 = month (June)
31 = 32nd hull built in 1981
M = ??? (Maybe a mold #?)
81 = year built (again)
F = ??? (Maybe a mold #?)
Also interesting to learn from an interview at the V18 website that many Victoria hulls were "sold" under consignment, then renumbered later at the factory so that the could go out as new boats to another dealer, sales being pretty bad at that time. (I think I got that right.)
