- Missie and her husband are
in the process repainting a Victoria 18 that they recently purchased.
They bought the boat from a lady who got it in her divorce settlement.
They found the boat needed painting, and were missing some pretty
odd parts like sails, tiller handle, mast pins, and travelers.
They are in the process of restoring her, and they are documenting
their work on the forum as a means to help others in the forum
with similar projects.

U.P.S. just delivered the tanbark
sails. (National
Sail Supply). They look just GREAT! It took a little
longer (3 weeks) than the sailmaker said it would, but it appears
to have been worth it. We got six or seven different quotes and
the price was also the best that we found.
-
- The boat is definately a construction project
at the minute.
-
- Just about everything has been removed off
the deck and in doing so we found where some of the water in
the cabin was coming from. We had leaks around screw holes around
the bow pulpit and cleats.
-
- It's amazing what some cleaning, sanding
and oil will do for 20 year old teak!
-
- The teak project is finished and ready for
re-assembly.
-
- Tomorrow I will begin the painting process
by priming her.
-
- We decided on Interlux Briteside Polyurethane
in Hatteras Off-White and Rustic Red. It should look nice with
the tanbark. The paint that was on their was just full of little
chicken pox looking holes, but only on the boot stripe. I've
filled and sanded for a solid day and hope that they are gone
for good.
-
- The boat is laying on her side in the backyard.
(SEE the story here).
Since this is a do it yourself project being done by a female,
simplicity is a plus. I'm doing one side, then calling in the
uncles and getting them to help turn her on her other side so
I can paint it.

I got a lot accomplished today.
Side one is totally sanded, patched and has the first coat of
primer on it. Tomorrow morning, weather permitting, I will sand
again and apply the 2nd (and hopefully last) coat of primer.
The primer had excellent coverage, after just one coat you can't
see any of the black and just the red boot stripe is showing
through.
- We took the rudder out today because the
bottom bolt was sheared off. It came off just exactly like Jerry
Wrenn's page said it would.
-
- We just used a little different approach
because our boat is off the trailer for painting. We got the
rudder out by sliding it out horizontally. Don't laugh--we had
the boat laying on it's side, with the keel balanced on 2 five
gallon buckets and it worked just great.
-
- The entire removal process took about 10
minutes. My uncle and I lifted the keel with a lever and Chuck
slid the buckets underneath. We had the keel about 24" off
the ground.
-
- We haven't put the rudder back on yet, because
we need to find a replacement pin, so tomorrow I'll take the
digital camera out and take some pictures. It's actually a pretty
simple assembly.

Hi,
Side one is complete! I'm attaching a picture so you guys can
see the difference some paint makes. It's really exciting seeing
how dramatic the change is. We have the new windows to install.
It cost $90. to have two new trapezoid windows cut out of 1/4"
bronze plexiglass and have the screw holes drilled. I took in
one of the old windows for a pattern. I have tried to drill plexiglass
before and made a mess of it so I decided to pay the $2.00 per
hole charge and let the pro's do it. Today at West Marine we
bought all new rope (New England Rope Sta-Set) we are using the
sta-set for everything except the hand held lines and are checking
on ordering Regatta Braid for the genoa and main sheets. Anyone
have any comments on Regatta braid? I'm also attaching a picture
of what the rudder assembly looks like with the rudder removed.
Side two is totally primed and sanded now, so hopefully the painting
will be complete by the end of next weekend. We are also going
to paint the deck the same color as above the waterline (Hatteras
Off-White) and add Interlux non-skid on the deck surfaces.

I'm also attaching
a not so great picture of the rudder assembly with the rudder
removed. I think I might have compressed it too much when I uploaded
it from the digital camera. Hopefully you guys can tell a little
something from it. I promise my paint is not all streaked! I'm
not sure why the image transferred like that. Any ideas Donald?
- Hope everyone had a great weekend! Hopefully
it won't be much longer before we've got our girl in the water.
